Answers:

  1. How long has Greater Montana Independent Electrical Contractors been in existence?
    • The Greater Montana Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) was formed in June 2001.

  2. What are the membership categories offered by the Association?
    • Contractor Member
    • Partner Member - product or service provider to contractors.

  3. Can I belong to Greater Montana IEC and not join IEC National?
    • All members of IEC chapters must belong to IEC National according to their bylaws and our affiliation.

  4. When are membership dues payable and what if I join after July 1?
    • Dues investment is payable on January 1 for the calendar year. New members can join during the year and pay dues on a quarterly basis. National dues are remitted with our chapter dues and are forwarded to Alexandria, VA on your behalf.

  5. When are what types of training programs are offered for professional development of contractors and field workers.
    • Our professional development programs such as foreman training bring national instructors to Montana for quality classes. We also work with our Partner Members on such quality classes as Motor Controls, Code Classes, Home Automation, to name a few.

  6. Are my employees and spouse/significant other encouraged to attend membership events?
    • Absolutely!

  7. What is IEC National?
    • This is our "parent" association with approximately 3,000 members nationwide. We choose to affiliate with this association and pay dues on an annual basis to support their work. They do much the same that we do on the local level and more, but their focus is on the national level. They represent us before Congress, publish a national magazine IEC Insights, develop our apprenticeship training curriculum, have an annual convention and expo, Bi-Weekly Fax Update, represent independent contractors on national code panels and much more.

  8. What does it mean to be a Chapter of IEC National?
    • Every member in a local chapter must be a dues-paying member of IEC National according to the Bylaws. There are approximately 78 state/local groups of independent electrical contractors throughout the nation that are affiliated with IEC National whose dues support the work on the National Level.

  9. Who attends National meetings such as the Legislative Conference and Convention?
    • All members are invited and encouraged to attend National functions. Once you go, you'll be hooked...many bring their families along and make it a vacation.

  10. Can I belong to more than one local Chapter of IEC?
    • IEC National has established "territories" for its chapters and you may join other chapters if you are a bonafide contractor in their area. You need pay National dues only once, but must pay local dues for each chapter you join.

  11. Now that I know all about IEC, what can I expect to gain personally through my participation?
    • In addition to all the tangible benefits already discussed, if you become involved and participate in association activities, you can expect to develop new relationships with fellow contractors who will offer to help and work with you to prosper your business. There may even be job referrals and/or bidding jobs together. You will have the opportunity to serve in leadership capacity and move up the chain of command if you so choose. You will have the privilege of "giving back" to the industry that has provided you with a living.
